2020 Summer Season Update

Earlier today, the Governor extended the school closure and now school's are closed indefinitly. Additionally, the stay at home guidelines have extended until April 30. If these dates hold, we will still be able to operate a postponed summer season using the revised dates we published last week. More details will follow.

SCPAS 2020 Summer Season Postponed

At this time, based on both the information we have available to us and the uncertainity that exists with school closings, SCPAS is delaying the start of the 2020 summer recreational softball season until June 8, 2020. Additionally, recogonizing that teams are under the control of their local organizations and not SCPAS, our stong advice is to stop all team activites until further notice. Even though the start of our season is delayed, it is still our goal to play as much of the regular season as possible. We are currently examining several different scenerios that would allow us to continue with that goal in mind however there are significant details that need to be worked out. Additional information will be circulated at a later date.It is also important to keep in mind that there is a significant amount of prep work to complete 2 weeks priot to the start of games. Any delay in our ability to complete that work may cause further delays in our season.  Finally, this situation is very fluid and further updates may be necessary. Please check back here frequently for updates.

SCPAS Guidance on Team Activities

Earlier this morning, PIAA District 3 announced that all school practices, scrimmages and contests are shut down. In addition, major sanctioning bodies including Little League and Babe Ruth have instructed their teams to curtail team activities.Consequently, our updated advice to organizations and teams is to curtail practices, scrimmages, contests and other team activities until March 27. This may be extended as the situation warrants.

We recogonize that the structure of SCPAS puts the management of teams that play in a SCPAS season, within the local control of a recreational organization or something similiar. We also recogonize that as of this posting, there are very few teams registered to play in our summer season as of yet. However coaches, parents, local officials, and others look to SCPAS for guidance and as this situation progresses, we will provide that guidance.

SCPAS AND CORONAVIRUS

All of us at South Central PA Softball are watching the events unfold as it relates to the Coronavirus infection which seems to be spreading across the Country. We are very careful to make sure that our actions are appropriate for the circumstances that are before us. At this time, there are no changes to our plans as it relates to the summer recreation softball season. However, we are developing an alternative strategy for the scheduling meeting, if it becomes necessary to avoid bringing all of the coaches to a single meeting. That strategy would include an online scheduling component as well as shipping balls and other materials directly to you. It is important to understand that no decision has been made at this time - we do want to have a plan in place in case we need to cancel the scheduling meeting.

At this point in time, we are not offering any guidance in regards to outside practices other than the CDC recommendations, which can be found on their website at www.cdc.gov. However, if teams play scrimmages, it is recommended that there not be direct hand contact among the players in the hand shake line or a shaking of hands at the plate meeting.

In order for us to make good decisions as we move forward, we are following the recommendations by the CDC; follow inititatives by the PA Dept of Health; consider actions and guidance by the PIAA; and consult with our own medical professionals including a Physician and an Infection Control Specialist.

Please refer back to our website at www.scpas.org for any updates.
